transformation

Contracts, Covenants + Communion

The come down is real. Last week, I flew a team out to Costa Rica (including my daughter in the role of makeup artist), to shoot content with me for all the things. If you weren’t watching the shoot in my Insta stories, you can catch up on some of it in this post, this post, and watch the highlights in Life + Legacy.

Two quizzes, one for the lawyer community to determine the wealth to happiness ratio of their law practice, one for the Personal Family Lawyer website to answer the question “what is the right type of estate plan for you?”

About 40 short-form insta/tik-tok style videos for both the lawyers, and for the clients they serve as Personal Family Lawyer firms.

And, then, I spent the last day making content for my personal brand, which I think is going to be the rebirth of “Ali Shanti”, remember her?

If you’re new here, “Ali Shanti” is my artist/priestess name. You can read the history of all my names here.

The content we filmed will come out on 2/22/2023 … the one-year anniversary of my wedding to myself.

It will tell the whole story.

Watch for it.

Contracts, Covenants + Communion: Tools for Practical Magic

Creating my marriage contract with myself was an act of practical magic that has transformed my life in the most epic ways.

I am beyond excited to share it all with you so you can consider how seemingly mundane and practical tools like contracts, and even wills and trusts, and insurance, and bookkeeping and tax filings, can create magic in your life too.

Truly, magic.

Stay tuned. So much more to come.

To your eyes (and heart) wide open,

Ali Katz

Use Independent Civic Stewardship to Create Unparalleled Demand for Your Law Practice

February 7th at 2:30pm ET

I’ve got a new masterclass for you! I’m going to show you how to Use Independent Civic Stewardship to Create Unparalleled Demand for Your Law Practice.

You’ll discover how participating in local civic affairs is good for you, your community, your law practice and your career as a lawyer.

It’s what lawyers always did, and don’t do as much anymore because we’re just so busy building businesses, raising kids and the like… but when you see how it can help your community and build your law practice at the same time, I think it’s going to be a game-changer for you.

Be sure to book time in your calendar to join us live on February 7th at 2:30pm ET if you possibly can. Or, if you already know you can’t make it live, register now and schedule time in your calendar to watch the recording afterward, so when we send it out, you can watch and take action.

I cannot believe I’m doing this …

If you were around these parts last year, you’ll remember that on 2/22/2022, I got married … to myself.

And, while I shared some of the story, I never shared all of it.

And, I never shared the actual wedding video itself.

Or really told the complete story of the transformational process that began when I created my marriage contract (my ketubah), had a formal engagement ceremony, and then married myself.

What I’ve discovered over the past year is that the marriage contract, engagement and wedding process were a portal of transformation that radically and dramatically changed my life.

  • I’ve healed a lifetime of challenges around belonging.
  • I’ve stepped into my personal power in a whole new way.
  • I’ve reclaimed the places I was steeped in drama triangles, and broken free.
  • I’ve solved any last issues around scarcity.
  • And I’m no longer boy crazy, like I was since kindergarten (still love boys, just not crazy about it anymore).

So, as my gift to myself, and to everyone else who may desire this sort of transformation in their own lives, I’m producing a “I’m not even sure what to call it” about the entire experience … mini-documentary perhaps? If you have a name for a thing that tells a story, that isn’t quite a documentary, but that shares a story and its lessons in video form, please hit reply and LMK.

I’m going all in with this. You can follow the journey in my stories on Insta or my Fan Page on Facebook (the stories don’t make it to my personal profile on FB, so if you want to follow along … you need to be on the Fan Page).

Filming begins on Thursday. I’m flying out a film crew. I’ve hired a storyteller, an executive producer, and I’m doing this. It feels a lot like the entire marriage contract to wedding portal did, honestly. I’m doing my part, but it’s clearly being guided by Life itself, and I’m just listening, showing up, and taking action by saying yes when it’s clear that there is a yes to be said.

It’s taken years to get to this level of clarity and discernment, and I think what I share in this “documentary” series will help you get there a lot more quickly.

Stay tuned. So much more to come.

To your eyes (and heart) wide open,

Ali Katz

Wow, what a year! Eyes Wide Open end of year “F” up … Preview: How to Clean it Up

As the year turned from 2022 to 2023, I almost ruined my life. At least that’s how it seemed. I made a choice on New Year’s Eve that triggered a core wound so deep that I literally felt as if my personal, professional, and social life was over.

I shared all the details on my Eyes Wide Open: the Membership call last night, but I’ll give you a little overview here because it may be able to help you, in case you weren’t there.

If you are a member, be sure to listen to the recording because I went deep into this + how I almost lost my Company in 2022, but got back 100% control on January 3, 2023 — woohoo!

And, how I handled crypto losses + a loan that didn’t get paid back in such a way that it’s all now coming back to me plus plus.

Finally, this piece …  the core wound that got touched, and how I handled it to create more of what I want instead of a repeat of old patterns of separation and pain.

Eyes Wide Open CORE WOUND Resolution …

I have a big wound around belonging.

Ever since kindergarten when cute little Peggy McGee with the blue eyes and blond braids didn’t want to be my friend, and excluded me from playing with her and my best friend, Melissa, I’ve repeated a pattern of exclusion.

It’s part of why I am so inclusive in my life today.

This pattern has repeated many times throughout my life, and the biggest pain of it occurred in high school when I did one very unattuned thing that resulted in my becoming an outcast for all of my high school years. A pariah. Called a slut while walking through the halls. All of it resulting in my not being able to go to any parties in my high school years, in a fist fight on my 16th birthday at the big football game, and a “gang” of mean girls coming to my house later to fight me again. It was super painful.

I was extremely sensitive, very confused, possibly on the spectrum of neurodivergence in some way, and none of the social dynamics made sense to me.

Now, I get it all. Phew, that was a long and hard road to travel.

The good news is that I’ve not only recovered from these painful events, I’ve become a woman who knows how to make friends, be a friend, and as one of my close friends recently said — Ali, most people can only handle relationships with at maximum 150 or so people (Dunbar’s people), but you somehow manage to be close with thousands of people. He was exaggerating, but it’s true because of these past experiences and the way I’ve grown through them, I hold intimate relationships with a LARGE extended community.

I’m able to do so because I’ve learned to navigate my own wounding, feel what’s here, take responsibility for it, and heal it in a way that has built tremendous self trust.

So the night of New Year’s Eve was a perfect example. I accidentally crossed a boundary with someone I had only recently met, and until I got to the other side, I couldn’t see any way to recover from my transgression.

To protect me from the pain of my actions, my mind wanted to do all sorts of things with what my higher self knew was a clear fuck up on my part.

  1. It wanted to reject all the people who I was afraid would reject me for my action (preemptive rejection is a strong strategy of protection — look at where you might be doing that in your own life to keep yourself safe).

  2. It wanted to pretend what I did wasn’t that big a deal and the other person shouldn’t be upset.

  3. It wanted to convince me that it wasn’t that big of a deal, and shrug it off as if it didn’t really matter.

But, my body, my heart, and my soul could see (eyes wide open) the truth, and wasn’t willing to accept any of that, even though in some ways perhaps it would have been easier to dismiss my responsibility for what occurred.

By dismissing my responsibility, though, I would have lost the huge benefit that accompanied the events … When we get to the core of a wound, feel it all the way through, and heal it by taking full eyes wide open responsibility- miracles occur.

Here’s what that looked like:

As I was in the catastrophic thinking that accompanies the triggering of a core wound, sure I had ruined my life, I was able to both be in the feelings and the fear, and also connect with my higher self — the part of me who knew that something important and valuable was happening — and that part was able to remind me to stick with my fear, and keep feeling it and find the gold.

The only gold I could see was that somehow this experience would result in more intimacy on the other side of what felt like exclusion and outcasting just like when I was in kindergarten and high school (and probably in many past lives as well).

And that’s exactly what occurred.

On the other side of the event that created the massive separation and wound, I asked for help from some people I was already close with (creating more intimacy and connection), and then the next day when I woke up, I reached out vulnerably to some people who were newer in my life and asked for connection and support.

Plus, I reached out to the person whose boundary I had crossed and took full responsibility for my actions.

What showed up was exactly what I had prayed for — more intimacy, more connection, more love — the exact opposite of what happened in kindergarten and high school, when I didn’t have the tools of adulthood that I have now.

I didn’t pre-emptively reject, I didn’t pretend it wasn’t a big deal to me or the other person (and it was in fact such a big deal to him that he wrote about it on his own Facebook wall), and I got vulnerable and asked for support in showing up and cleaning it up.

As a result, I didn’t ruin my life, but instead made it exponentially better.

And, now, thanks to all of that happening, I’m going on a trip to Egypt this Spring with the people I thought I ruined my relationship with, and that I’ve been wishing I could hang out with for a long time.

Best of all, I’m taking my own adult kids with me.

Even better than that, it’s all led me to understand something I almost couldn’t see hidden behind my core wounds, and all the ways I’ve been operating in the world to keep me from feeling the things I was most afraid of were creating exactly what I was most afraid of … more on that one another day.

This was plenty for today. Before you go, don’t miss the features below of Practical Magic (there’s still time to plan your year using practical tools and magic) + the time management workshop I’m hosting for lawyers today + the radio show appearances you may want to check out.

To your eyes (and heart) wide open,

In the fire + pictures from Costa Rica (including my boyfriend!)

A quick love letter from Costa Rica to share with you some of my experience here in this beautiful place.

First and foremost, for those of you who are most focused on the Eyes Wide Open business teachings, and not so much in the Raw and Real parts of what I share, I’ll warn you now that this love letter is a mix of both.

There’s a little business and a little raw/real happening in this love letter. If you are all business, all the time, you may want to close this one down now and get on to the next. But if you like the raw/real, read on and you’ll get some business goodness as a bonus.

I came down to Costa Rica a week and a day ago with my family, so I could speak at Envision Festival. I haven’t gotten all the pictures uploaded yet, but you can see a few on my private Facebook profile.

And here’s a quickie of the whole family as we were sending Melina, Lotus and the boys back home after Envision. The boys (men really at this point), are my son, Noah, Kaia’s boyfriend, Max, and my boyfriend (yes, I did just say that), Rainbow. Yes, his name is Rainbow.

Kaia and I stayed on for a women’s retreat with Jess Magic and Elena Meta, and in it we are exploring the elements, dance, voice and writing.

Today, the element was Fire. Breath of fire, dance of fire, sweat lodge, fiery food, and a fire ceremony to burn up whatever is ready to be released.

For me, it was the control paradigm and the last vestiges of my need to prove myself.

So, what does all this have to do with building your life and income awake, aware and on your terms?A few things …

#1: Integration of the learnings

In the past, I’ve moved so quickly from one thing to the next that I have not had time to integrate the learnings. Just last month, I went immediately from a private event at Esalen (called Return) to lead my Money Map Masters in a retreat and then immediately after that into a month of intense focus to prepare for me to be out of the office for two weeks.

This time, I decided to stay on here in Costa Rica for an extra week to attend this retreat with Kaia and to integrate the teachings and learnings from my time at Envision.

Taking my whole family to Envision was a big deal. It’s really a working event for me, not just a vacation. I’m there to speak and network, not just to hang out and have fun. And having the kids (particularly my 12-year old who still really needs a lot of me) with me was an added challenge.

But having them with me was also really fun and I had a lot of support from friends, as you can see in the pictures. Plus, I always feel really great when the kids get to hear me speak because I’m teaching some radical money concepts that they aren’t going to get in school or from the media, so I’m glad they are getting it from me and not just by osmosis, but consciously and intentionally.

#2: How to free yourself in your business

I’ll be gone a total of two weeks. Most of it off my computer, other than time to write a couple of emails, do Facebook and chat about a few things with my team via Skype.

A month ago, I was working like crazy. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage getting out of town, let alone being mostly offline for two weeks.

So I decided to make the investment in hiring someone who could really stand in for me in both businesses and bit the bullet. I brought in Brenda Mathisen (most recently Chief of Staff for one of the PayPal investor/founders), spent a month connecting deeply with her and providing training and then left town so she could take over with minimal interference from me.

This is the counter-intuitive way to free yourself in business. Get the right person or people on board and then leave town. In the past, I thought I needed to hold on and oversee things for way too long. What I realize now is that was disempowering and indicative of my lack of trust.

By leaving town, I showed my team (and Brenda) I trust them and while I know some mistakes will likely be made, I trust them to learn, grow and evolve from those mistakes, which includes figuring out how to fix them when they happen.

Repeatedly, I have seen this with women lawyers in my New Law Business Model coaching program — they get pregnant, and if they coach with me ahead of their maternity leave to hire the right person then hand off systems with trust at the foundation, they leave to have a baby and come back two months later with a practice that is thriving far more than it would have if they had been in the office micro-managing every day.

Try this one yourself, even if you aren’t having a baby. Just plan a vacation and then actually take it. But do remember to hire a great person first.

#3: Death

The last thing I want to mention in this week’s love letter is Death.

Confronting the reality of your mortality will result in you having a better life. It is coming up in my reality frequently and I want you to start to consider how that might be true in your life.

Have you confronted your mortality? If so, have you planned to make life better for your loved ones after you are gone or are you starting doing that now? How is your own life getting better by looking at the reality of your own death?

I know this may not be an easy conversation or consideration for you, but it is an important one so you can make the very best decisions regarding the use of your resources that you possibly can.

If you want any support with that, please send me a message at [email protected] and let me know. It’s something I’m being asked to do more and more lately and I’m feeling called.

Love beyond,

Ali

PS — we have twenty new Eyes Wide Open members who are also B-Schoolers and I want to send a great big welcome to you all! If you have not already received your invite to our private member’s forum and requested to join, please check your email including the spam folder. Welcome! I’m excited to see you there.

Perfection Not Required

Recently I was in Esalen for 4 days (check out the pictures here) and then leading my Money Map Masters Founder’s Group retreat here in Boulder (here are some pictures from the retreat).

I didn’t open my computer for the whole week.It felt great. And then on Sunday, I got anxious. Probably because I hadn’t yet written this Love Letter, or the emails announcing the end of the discount code for our annual membership offer, or the emails announcing our payment plan options.

Rather than succumbing to it and getting back onto the computer before I was ready, I let it be. I felt the anxiety, tried not to create any story about it, and spent time with my family.

Then, the work week started and I was deep into re-entry with focus on the expansion of the New Law Business Model business model. I’m bringing in a COO so we can go to the next level of growth while I step more into creating content and away from running the company.

I’ve tried to break through this level three times and I haven’t made it yet, but I’m betting the 4th time’s a charm.

So, here I am, sending this out half a week late and remembering (and reminding you) that it’s okay. Perfection is not required here.  Sure, consistency is best in business. If you can send out your newsletter the same day every week, awesome. And, if that’s not a match with your life, don’t beat yourself up for it.

Just get it out when you can and trust that the people who need to get it will.

I am making a conscious decision to not push myself the way I have in the past, to really live my Money Map and put myself first, family second and work third, knowing I have enough.

Pre-Money Map, I would push myself way harder than was really sustainable to make sales, to be “successful” by someone else’s definition and to keep up with the launch whizzes who are part of my peer group.

When I updated my own Money Map last year, I realized that it was not reasonable to have two businesses that were doing regular high pressure launches of products/programs to different audiences. Not without burning myself out.

So, even though I had invested $24,000 in a mastermind designed to support me to take my business to the next level and $15,000 in a launch manager, I decided to take a different path. I chalked those investments up to learning what I didn’t want, and sunk more deeply into what I do.

While I want the work of Money Map and Eyes Wide Open out into the world, it can’t be at the expense of my well-being and my relationships.  Those are priority.

So, I did end up getting out emails about the end of our payment plan, but I didn’t announce the end of the discount, which means I’ll extend it a couple of days. And that’s okay.

When you are in business for yourself, you get to choose what gets done and what doesn’t.

And I hope you choose wisely, putting yourself first, relationships second and earning money only last, with a clear plan to know you have enough so you can.

To do so will require you to get beyond your Money Dysmorphia (the distorted view of our finances that causes us to make poor choices around our non-renewable assets, time, energy and attention) and start making life and work choices from clarity.

My friend Myka did this and she was able to carve out 6 weeks to write her book, trust that she doesn’t need to take on revenue generating work for 3 months and is freeing up the space to live the life she’s always wanted.

Why wait to have the life you really want?

This is the time, your time is now. My work is to guide you to see the resources available to you to live that life today and stop putting it off until you have enough. You have enough now. It’s time to mine it and truly live.

I love you so much. Keep showing up through all of it.  Perfection is not necessary.

Love beyond,

Ali

Inspiration to Leap and Rites of Passage

If you’ve already introduced yourself, I’ve probably fallen in love with you. If you haven’t written in, please tell me about you; let me fall in love with you too ([email protected]).

I’m gearing up for a BIG week next week and I’ll be honest I’ve got a bit of pre-big things happening anxiety kicking in.

I leave for a secret retreat at Esalen on Sunday and get back on Thursday so I can immediately dive in to our first Money Map Masters in-person retreat here in Boulder. I’m super excited for all of it and a little anxious about being off the computer and away from my kids for pretty much the whole week before the in-person retreat.

Gratefully, I do believe both the businesses and the kids are ready for this kind of independence.

In some ways my kids and businesses are at the same stages, on the verge of adulthood and I’m being invited to let go more and more as they individuate from me, which has me on my edge, in the best way possible.

Learning to let go is one of the most valuable lessons we can receive in this lifetime, I think.

There’s a time to micro-manage and infuse yourself into your kids and businesses and a time to let it all go and trust you’ve baked enough of you into the system that they will continue to operate at a high level even without you there.

Let go of trying to control the kids, but only after you know you’ve given them a solid foundation of learning to trust themselves and be trustworthy. Let them make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, grow and evolve.

Let go of control of the businesses, but only after you’ve established the systems and got a team in place that you know trusts itself to carry out the vision you’ve established.

One of my teams had an intervention with me last week and said “go, Ali. we’ve got this. You can be all of yourself out there in the world and know we’re holding down the fort while you do. We love you, we accept you, now get the “F” out of here.”   Well, it wasn’t word for word like that, but that’s how it felt.

And, I believed them. I felt so loved. We are creating a plan for them to buy the business so we can be partners and truly share the wealth that’s being created here.

My kids’ dad is in Thailand until Thursday and this is the first time ever I’m leaving the kids’ for 4 nights without me or their dad here. We do have a house guest here to stay with them and they are 12 (almost 13) and 16, but this feels like a huge rite of passage. They’ve assured me they will work together to get Noah off to school each morning, go to bed at a decent time and eat healthfully throughout the week.

Trusting my children to become independent is the weirdest process in the world. It requires me to face all of my own insecurities and I look forward to sharing more of my process with you as I see the outcomes of a few experiments I’m running in the background while parenting radically differently than most.

I’ll let you know how this 4-days away experiment went in the next Love Letter.

In the meantime …

I’ve been looking back over the many leaps I’ve made in my life to see if I can identify what most supported me during these times of great progress, so I can offer it back to you.

The leaps have been many …

From the security of the 6-figure paycheck into my own law practice. From the law practice into online business. From the online business to the farm and unwilling to do anything for money I wouldn’t do for free. To the willingness to let it all go and file bankruptcy. To rebuilding everything from scratch using “share the wealth” business models in which everyone wins. To coming out publicly and living with two names and distinct personalities in the world.

And here’s what I realize … I never would have even made the first leap if I had not seen someone else do it first. Just about every leap I’ve made has happened after I’ve seen someone else do it and said to myself “if she can do it, I can do it.”

When I first launched my own law practice, I had the courage to do it because I saw my friend Diedre successfully doing it. Then, when I decided to move it online, I had the courage to do it because I saw other women successfully creating lives of freedom and flexibility while sharing their work in the world.

Today, I am going beyond what I’ve seen anyone else do and I’m charting my own course. But, there’s no way I would have even gotten to this point if I had not allowed myself to be inspired and guided by other women (and a couple of men) who had done what I wanted to do and supported those early leaps with their courageous jumps first.

I hope that watching me go first is inspiring you to more of what you truly desire in life. I hope that I’m giving you permission to live all of yourself and integrate your work with your life fully so that it’s hard to tell the difference between work and play. I hope I’m the guiding light you need to know you can do this — you can make the leap and trust that the safety net you seek will be there to support you in the form of all the resources you need to experience the outcome you desire.

It does help to have a guide. It does help to have the support of someone who has already been there and done that. I’ve had a coach every step of the way. Each one perfectly keyed to guide me because they had already done what I wanted to do.

If you’d love inspiration to make the leap into an online business from a current bricks and mortar, on location reality, you may enjoy this post about how I made $117,000 in 67 minutes and transformed my business reality overnight (after a lot of not succeeding because I didn’t have the right guidance and support). The links at the bottom of the post are no longer active, but the post itself will guide you to the 4 biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make when making this leap to the online world + the 4 best tips I have for smoothing the process out and doing it well.

If you’d love inspiration and support for something you know I’ve experienced, please write in and let me know so I can speak to it in a future video or one of these love letters here.

It’s my absolute joy to share my experiences so you can learn, grow and evolve too because that brings us closer than ever to being able to play together.

With so much love,

Ali
