5th year in a row Inc. 5000 + Massive Breakdown
Is this the breakdown before the breakthrough or what?

We just got notice that New Law Business Model has made it to the Inc. 5000 for the 5th year in a row with 127% growth. Each year, we’ve had about the same amount of growth, and remained around the same place in the list … consistent, steady and exponential.

Over these years, we’ve been laying the foundation for what’s coming, and we’re right on the precipice of a whole new reality.

7 years ago, I was just coming out of the biggest breakdown of my life up to that date. 2015 was the year Life forced me to wake up, grow up and show up at a whole new level of motherhood and leadership as the CEO of my companies.

I made the decision to pause Eyes Wide Open and went into 2016 with a commitment to focus all of my energy and attention on New Law Business Model. I chose to take years of spiraling downward, and turn the trajectory into an upward spiral, and it paid off.

By 2018, we found our way onto the Inc. 5000 list (at #4897 with 60% growth, just squeaking in, but we made it), and again in 2019 (99% growth at #3531), and then in 2020 (at 2,633 with 147% growth), and 2021 at (2,808 with 141% growth), and finally this year with 127% growth.

And, now, we are hitting up against a new level that is calling me into an even higher level of my own leadership and service.

At this moment that looks like being on the precipice of a major rebrand and relaunch of both New Law Business Model, and our family facing brand, Personal Family Lawyer, which I back burnered back in 2009.

I am beyond excited to show you what I’ve been working on with my team over the last year, and if you’ve ever been involved in a remodel project you know that the last 5-10% is the hardest, and often the moment when you want to throw up your hands in despair and say “I quit!”

Well, I’ve already tried that path, and I can tell you from experience that it isn’t the fast path to the upward spiral.

Instead, what’s being called upon from me now is to keep my eye on the prize (a successful rebrand/relaunch) and my vision on the future I want to create. In this case, it’s once again finding myself with the time, energy, and attention to focus on educating families and business owners on legal, insurance, financial and tax systems (LIFT systems) with right-alignment of time, energy, attention and money (TEAM resources), in service to a world that truly works for all.

Whew that’s a mouthful! And, a heartfull too.

This has been so many years in the making, and of course anything that is not in full right alignment with the vision must come up to be met, and resolved — and either moved out of the field or shifted into right alignment.

This is what happens when you are about to uplevel. And, when the breakdowns happen, you can either collapse and let them take you into a downward spiral, or let it be the wake up call that’s necessary to spiral up. 

Your power lies in the choice between these two options.

So does mine. And, this time I’m choosing the upward spiral. I’m keeping my eyes open on the future I desire to live into, paying attention to what’s not in alignment, letting the misaligned parts go, and moving ahead with a consistent choice to be more of who I really am.

And, one way or another you will see a couple new websites + a new edition of the Wear Clean Underwear book + more podcasts and education from me on Love, Money, Life & Legacy coming this year.

Until then, you can be sure I’ve got my head down, and 100% focus on writing all the copy necessary for us to get there.

What if you want to make more money as a lawyer? Does that mean you have to work more hours and have a high volume, low cost practice? Or gouge your clients by billing in 6 minute increments or keeping them on the phone longer than is really necessary?

Or is there a model that can work for both you and your clients?

It’s easy to make an assumption that you have to choose between your best interests and your clients’ best interests when so many firms live and die by the billable hour or too low of flat fees. 

But the problem with billing by the hour is that it caps your income and happiness.

And it makes your clients focus on your cost instead of your value.

But low flat fees can be just as problematic because if you aren’t charging enough, you cannot deliver on a service that is truly meaningful for your clients, or hire the support you need to have a team and turn your law practice into a law business you love.

Two big learnings from my week on the river

I’m just back from a week of rafting on the Salmon River in Idaho with 20 women business leaders + 5 boat women/guides.

Pictures to come, but for today, I want to share w you the two biggest learnings I experienced from and on the river, while they are fresh in my heart and soul.

My biggest learning so far was that a digital detox really is crucial to mental health and well-being. 

I slept 7-9 hours a night, and rested my brain as I let myself be led by the boatwomen there to guide us. As a result, I am able to show up for all the challenges of life and business with so much more equanimity.

Perhaps that’s a “duh!” but for me I needed to experience the benefits for myself to have it land in my body that way, and my guess is that if you aren’t regularly detoxing from the digital, you may want to give it a try.

The challenge is how to create the conditions for a digital detox. There are so many reasons to not do it, and they are all extremely compelling.

  • Not enough time.
  • Not enough money.
  • What would I do during a digital detox?
  • My kids need me.
  • My team needs me.
  • My clients need me.
  • I’m too old.
  • I’m too out of shape.
  • I’m too disabled.

Every single woman on the trip could have claimed at least one of those reasons.

There was a woman who came on the trip with $1200 left in her bank account. There was a woman who could barely walk due to an injury that’s left her fairly disabled for the last several years. There was a woman who is juggling multiple businesses, massive and fast business growth, and young children. There was a woman who pushed out her launch to be there.

Then there was me, navigating a huge turn of the wheel that can lead to a major upward spiral, or a slide back down to revisit some past lessons that are getting another chance to be lived again, but this time differently. Yes, that’s a big cryptic, but it’s all quite delicate and I’m in the midst of it, so I can’t say more quite yet.

Here’s what I can say: every single one of us is better off for having made the choice to be there. 

And, if she can do it, you can do it.

That’s lesson #2 — and it’s not a new lesson, as it’s a mantra that’s consistently guided me throughout my life as a businesswoman, since the very beginning.

My first $25k/month as a brand new law practice owner, a mom of two little one’s at home, and no idea what I was doing when it came to business — it happened because I knew another woman, a mom like me, who had left BigLaw started her own estate planning practice, and was doing $25k months.

If she could do it, I could do it.

Most of what I’ve done (not all, but most) has been as a result of seeing someone else go first. 

And, if she can do it, I can do it.

So can you.

Whether it’s a digital detox, or a 7-figure business, or leaving your job to start your own thing, or buying your own homestead … if she can do it, you can do it. And, that goes for you whether you are a he, she or a ze. 

If they can, you can.

So, today, I leave you with the eyes wide open question … how can you get yourself a digital detox this month? Even if just for one day? Better if it’s a weekend, and even better if it’s a week.

And, during that detox, what do you want to dream into that you see someone else out there doing … take inventory, begin to make a list of all the people you watch online who are doing what you want to do. 

If you aren’t sure who to put on your list, consider whose social media you are always checking out. Or, if you can’t quite tell by that … you’ll know they are candidates for your “if s/he can, I can” list if you feel any amount of jealousy or judgment toward them at all, and yet you still track their activities in various ways.

Pay attention to who and what you pay attention to over the next couple of weeks, write their names down in a journal, and take them into your digital detox this month to see what they may reveal to you about your next steps.
